Just how Ballard are ya? Take the Nordic Heritage Museum flag test.

Name those Nordic flags!
Answers at bottom of page….no cheating!
One recent sunny afternoon while strolling around Ballard I found myself standing in front of The Nordic Heritage Museum. I was peering up at the row of flags above the main entrance when I heard a voice say “Can you name all those flags?”
The voice belonged to Marian who has been volunteering at the museum since 1989! She bought her Ballard home for a mere $13,000 way back when. Ah, the good old days!
I unwisely mentioned that I was from Ireland which added greater pressure to name them correctly. Using delaying tactics to buy myself some time, I asked why Ballard didn’t have an Irish Heritage Museum? Then again, we do have Conor Byrne’s pub I suppose!
I rambled off Finland, Sweden and Denmark but was struggling with the other two. Scandously, I needed a hint for the Norweigan flag despite the fact that I walk past them all over Ballard most days of the week. Bad Conor!!
The last one completely threw me and finally I gave up. Marian reminded me that it was Iceland. She said that a hint for remembering the Icelandic flag was to think of the red cross as fire from the volcanoes which formed Iceland. Also, when all five countries are grouped together, they are referred to as Nordic but with Iceland excluded, are referred to as Scandanavian.
I told her an Irish monk discovered America before the Vikings but somehow, I don’t think she believed me. Not sure I believe it myself!
So, below are the answers to the flag quiz. I should have paid more attention in school!.
Form left to right: Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
