Seattle Neighborhoods: Fremont

troll

Fremont, the modestly self-proclaimed “Center of the Universe” is a vibrant and quirky little place to live. Yes indeed, Fremont does have naked cyclists as part of its Summer Solstice Parade, but that is but one day per year. The rest of the year, you can enjoy a collection of excellent public artwork including a Volkswagen-devouring Troll that lives under the Aurora bridge, a vibrant core with excellent bars and restaurant options, and once you manage to get across the Fremont bridge, a short commute to downtown Seattle.

Anyone who has lived in Seattle for a long time will tell you that back in the 1970’s, Fremont was a run down neighborhood featuring biker and stoner bars with many vacant storefronts, particularly along and around the ship canal. Probably the single most important factor in the revitalization of Fremont was the upgrade of the commercial core. Older structures were rehabbed and new ones added. The 90’s saw a large change along the ship canal with a mixture of office and retails space including the current home of Adobe’s headquarters. You are now more likely to see a Dockers-clad electrical engineer than a menacing biker dude. Today, Fremont may not be the bohemia capital of the world but it has retained enough of its funkiness to differentiate itself from many other Seattle neighborhoods

One drawback of Fremont’s transformation is the traffic. The Fremont Bridge has low clearance over the Ship Canal, opens more than any other drawbridge in the United States and stands in the way of commuters getting in and out of Fremont. Patience is a virtue!

Fremont is bordered by the ship canal (and the Burke Gilman Trail) to the south, by Phinney Ridge to the north, with Ballard to the west and Wallingford to the east. The short distance to downtown has made Fremont real estate very tempting for those who want suburban living but without the long commute. Fremont is also a short stroll to Gasworks Park and fine place to fly a kite, throw a Frisbee or have a picnic.  The park has great views of downtown, Lake Union, sea-planes and or if you’re a bit odd in the head, you can watch rust forming!

Fremont Real Estate

For many years, Fremont homes were relatively inexpensive. The majority of its single-family homes were built in the first three decades of this century. Architectural styles include Craftsman bungalows, Victorians and so-called Farm Houses: basic, two-story structures with high ceilings, fir floors and 1,500 or so square feet. What kept housing prices in check was the neighborhood's reputation as a bohemian, alternate neighborhood

As with other Seattle neighborhoods, Fremont real estate has undergone a big change over the last 20 years with condo and townhome developments replacing some of the Fremont’s houses. Today, Fremont homes for sale are some of the most sought after properties in Seattle.
