Real estate lingo and euphemisms, NW style

When you start looking at homes on-line and reading for-sale flyers, no doubt you will notice certain words and phrases Seattle Realtors will use to describe the listing. Trust me, one activity that a lot of agents don’t look forward to is attempting to wax lyrical about the homes they are listing on the market. It can’t be denied, but we real estate agents are in the sales business and hence prone to using “salesy” terms. Also, when it comes time for you to sell your own home I’m sure you would like the agent to massage the truth a little to present your home in the best light possible?

In an episode of the Simpsons, Marge becomes a real estate agent and is scolded by Red Jacket Realty broker Lionel Hutz for having a no-pressure sales approach:

Marge: “Well, like we say: ‘The right house for the right person.’ “
Hutz: “Listen, it’s time I let you in on a little secret, Marge. The right house is the house that’s for sale. The right person is anyone.”
To drive home his point, Hutz shows her photos of houses for sale.
Marge: “It’s awfully small. … “
Hutz: “I’d say it’s awfully — cozy!”
Marge: “That’s dilapidated… . “
Hutz: “Rustic!”
Marge: “That house is on fire!”
Hutz: “Motivated seller!”

So here’s a list of the local Realtor lingo used to describe to describe Seattle real estate listings….
